Europeans wanted spices such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper. The Spice Routes were maritime routes, which means they were routes taken by ships over the seas. Researchers guess that the Silk Road was a major way that the Black Death plague was passed during this time, too. It was later revived by the Mongols in the 13th century, and Marco Polo used it when he became one of the first Europeans to go to China. When the Roman Empire fell in the fourth century CE, people stopped using the Silk Road. Usually people passed off the goods to others along the 4,000-mile route, not traveling the whole thing themselves. From there, goods were loaded onto ships that sailed for Mediterranean ports. The Silk Road started in China and followed along the Great Wall until it crossed into Afghanistan through the Pamir Mountains. Along the route, trading centers began popping up, which became places where people shared knowledge and ideas. Not only was the Silk Road used for transportation of goods, it was also the way that people shared ideas, knowledge, religion, and technology with each other. In exchange for the silk, the Chinese got gold, silver, and wool from Europe. This route connected China and the ancient Roman Empire, and people traded silk along this pathway.

The Silk Road may be the most famous ancient trade route. Not only were goods transported over these roads, but people also shared knowledge, ideas, religious practices, and even illness in some cases. The creation of trade networks involved roads between points, and these roads many times became well-traveled. People wanted and needed these things, so they were willing to travel to get them or to pay others to get them and bring them back. Often, specific goods such as salt and spices were scarce and in high demand. I also attached the savegame although it is super easy to reproduce.Over the centuries, trade routes have been established that connected places where goods were produced with people living in other places who wanted to buy these items. The screenshots I attached show plenty marketplaces in Latium, few months after the were built. Started another game, deleted all buildings in Roma, built 9 marketplaces (+22,5% trade routes, so at least +1), waited a few months after they were built, still nothing. I then realized that maybe the problem was that the trade routes are only counted in the capital territory, as the pop assimilation and civilization bonuses are only counted in the territory they are built in. I also tried with all DLC's disabled, same result. You start with 6 trade routes in Latium, I waited a few months after they were built, nothing changed, should have increased by 2 or 3 routes. I could build 17, which should result in +42% trade routes. Started a new game as Rome, turned on 'instantbuild' in the console, gave myself plenty cash, and built marketplaces in all building slots in capital province Latium.

I have normally two mods enabled that I disabled to try this. The pop assimilation and civilization bonuses from marketplaces seem to work though, if only in the territory they are built in, not province wide. I deleted all marketplaces, waited a few months, still 26 trade routes. I got suspicious because I didn't see the modifier when hovering my mouse over the number of trade routes. I had more than 20 total, which should add at least 50% to the number of trade routes in Latium. I built many in my capital province of Latium, in the four cities surrounding Roma, because it seemed super useful. Marketplaces should add 2,5% to trade route totals in the province they are built in. Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
